During the first two years of the project the eLene2learn network collected more than 60 case studies, where teachers and students of Secondary and Higher Education provide practical tips and indications on their "first hand" learning experiences using ICT and digital media. This "collection" contains two different types of report:

  • The "How to guide" scenarios describe current practices, tools and methodologies used in the application of ICT to develop learning to learn competencies. The scenarios were collected through Focus Group with students and teachers; Download the printable version of the "How to guide"
  • The Case studies report, in detail the implementation of  practices, methodologies and tools used within real classroom settings. Recommendations and suggestions help you assess the benefit of replicating these practices, methodologies, etc. in your own context. These resources are highly valuable as they come from a direct evaluation by  students and teachers involved.  Some of these resources are (also) partly available in Italian, French, Greek, Finnish, Polish, Spanish and German. .Purpose of use
Nearly all new students of Computer Science use IRC for peer tutoring and peer guidance, coordinating group work etc. Also older students and some teachers use IRC and may offer their tutoring and guidance related on learning assignments or more general questions (even late in the evenings).

.Way of use (as individual or group activity; tasks; etc.)
IRC is used for semi public guidance, where someone asks and all can see the answers as well. Some students save the discussions of IRC channels for themselves and use the most valuable parts in their learning portfolio. Users can be anonymous and they use nicknames during the chat. For every Bachelor level course (and for some Masters courses as well) an own IRC channel is created, so that people on the same course can interact with each other without the need to know the people beforehand.

.Advantages of such a use for Transition. Innovative use
Communication skills improve, you learn to describe your problems to other people, you learn to guide and help others. The discussions can be read afterwards so that the process can be traced and studied if needed. You can anonymously ask all kinds questions (for example those you think the answers are self-evident for the others) freely without the fear of judgment. Using IRC or similar chat helps to build bridges between students (and also in some cases between students and teaching staff). Some university lecturers in the Faculty have used the IRC channel during lecture to activate students. Lecturer has checked the IRC channel during lecture breaks and then brought into discussion topics from the channel. Students could during the lecture write messages to the channel, such as "I don't understand this XXXX, does it work like YYYY?" and the lecturer take this into account and adjust the latter part of the lecture based on those comments. Especially for introvert students this is an excellent way to ask questions and give feedback, because you don't draw attention to yourself in the lecture hall. (It should be noted that for a few years the Computer Science major freshmen have had an opportunity to get a notebook laptop for loan and it can be used during lectures. The same effect could be done with smartphones etc.) The IRC channel is universally used by people interested on programming. Some students have used it even before they start their studies in the department. Using a chat like this in education makes the transition easier.

.Disadvantages of such a use
The media (IRC) is discussions-based, which means that reading the backlog (previous discussions) might be tricky. If the channel has only a few active users at least some of the benefits are not there (because it limits the communication diversity).
