Specific information about given case
.Aim • To give the possibility to pupils to do a self-reflection , to give the pupils a possibility to learn from their experiences, particularly on their competencies , to facilitate their future learning and the choices of studies in higher education in order to play an active role in society and access to a network of professionals.
• To be trained in self-assessment so that they can understand the main purpose of their learning and thereby grasp what they need to do to achieve
• to draw up their CV and to write letters applying for jobs or answering offers of work. Each one (pupil, job seeker, employee ...) can clearly present its past experiences, current skills, and professional way he intends to take to reach goal.
.Objectives For the pupils :
• To learn what is a competence and identify their own ones
• To improve their confidence by a best knowledge of themselves
• To be able to write a professional CV
• To be able to carry out an eportfolio
.Learning to learning (L2L) competences to be achieved • self-regulation
• self-management
• ability to handle obstacles and change
• communication (reading and writing)
• collaboration
• motivation and confidence
.Proposed activities Collaborative practices between teachers and pupils and within the classroom. The pupils have to implement "Wall of wonder". It is an original method to help pupils to identify the main steps they have taken to become what they are today, identify competences, to mobilise and recognise them, to use an Eportfolio and to help them to write their own CV.
.Pedagogical approach taken The implementation was carried with a collaboration between teachers and outside participant (researchers of University of Lorraine)
In a first step we explained to the pupils who we are, what we intend to do. We asked them about their intents concerning following studies.
In a second step we presented the frame of work and the tools which we will use.
In a third step we used "autogenic training" which through autosuggestion, autogenic training deliberately influences bodily functions such as heart rate, breathing and circulation in order to remind the main steps of their life.
In a forth step we tried to collect additional professional experiences.
In a fifth step we associated past experiences and portfolio of skills
And finally we implemented the tool Lorfolio
.Methods of evaluation A first step of the evaluation has been done through a set of questions which have been asked to the pupils. Those questions were about the direct benefit of the experience, what was going well or wrong .etc.
A second step of evaluation will be done when the pupils will be students in higher education) the outcomes will be completed and evaluated during the first semester of academic year. We will compare two groups : experimental one and control group (other classes of the vocational schools) This second step of evaluation will try to measure the effects of the implementation on the improvement of the transition
.Ethical statement Experiences and lessons took place between October 2012 and February 2013 for the first part. They took place during time schedule. Work was reassigned to allow pupil to purchase their studies normally. The experience was stopped when it was necessary (we have stopped our work two times: work placement and exams). Within this context, we had been clear as to how an adequate supervision on the use personal data was secured. Researchers should disassociate their role as researcher from other roles throughout the project.
Evaluation of the outcomes and impact for learners (summaries of feedback)
(with particular attention paid to the initial aims and objectives of the implementation plan and the key competencies developed)
.Summary of student feedback - Usage (max 200 words) The implementation took place during time schedule one hour per week between October 2012 and February 2103 so all the pupils used the tools during this time .
They didn't use them outside of the school .
.Summary of student feedback - Benefits (max 200 words) After working participating pupils became more comfortable and confident. After "autogenic training" (it is a relaxation technique) the pupils' interest was higher. The pupils have become more at ease and week by week we have seen them grow in confidence. The pupils gradually learned how to use the computer and eventually opening the world of the Internet dedicated exclusively to the professional world. They started sharing documents and electronic sheets. Furthermore computers have been used as a mean to exchange information. Helped by online resource they share their information. However, majorities do not give out personal information, such as their password, their parents' names, their telephone number, their instant messaging number, their address. Undoubtedly, after a few weeks pupils recognize that skills and abilities are acquired.
.Summary of student feedback - Development of competencies (max 200 words) • Self-regulation: by using Lorfolio pupils have to choose right items. The greater number and variety and mix of channels that will become available seem to be opening up the field for more reliance on self-regulation.
• Self-assessment: the pupils have to choice their own competencies in a proposed list
• Self-management: analytical and summary skills. Face to the proposal they developed new abilities : imagination, resourcefulness, better organization
• Thinking, problem-solving and decision making : Analysis and summary skills; Popularization; Teamwork skills; • communication (reading and writing)
• collaboration : availability; respect for procedures; Team player; ability to manage conflict; ability to manage work time
• motivation and confidence : advisory role
.Summary of student feedback - Supporting transition (max 200 words) The dominant impression is that learning opportunities reported in the project are mainly focused on supporting transition to employment. However, by feeling the various information fields they acquire, they became aware about of the expectation of the university and/or labor market. They were also able of selecting and identifying relevant elements that would be useful for the future. If they do not recognize and/or identify they were looking for new approaches by asking to other pupils. Most reported that the majority of pupils had increased their self-esteem and self-awareness of their skills, and were able to market themselves more effectively to employers. Most of the pupils find themselves unable to pursue higher education at university due to their compulsory schooling strewn with pitfall, but some of them said that they feel able to go on to higher learning.
It emerged also that there are some pupils with anxieties and feelings of low ability in respect of certain devices. After they now had more confidence in themselves and begin to implement the online CV by themselves. And finally the more they do, the more confident in and committed to the results they are.
We do wait the second part of experience (December) to collect and confirm more information;
.Summary of student feedback - Challenges or barriers (max 200 words) Drastically and academic learning and professional knowledge have become an obligatory prerequisite for every form of professional integration, however in many cases the literacy levels attained were not sustainable and that it was necessary to carry out an educator to ensure that learning took place; The professor is a key to the group process, over and above the lesson.
The language used and the tools developed were adapted to the pupil's vocabulary and reality.
.Summary of student feedback - Improvements that can be made to the activity or the application (max 200 words) To extend this experience to a wider public teachers involved should receive prior training during their studies. Training modules on the use of ICT and how to express a competence should be part of the teacher training. A better equipment of schools is necessary. Sequences dedicated to the use of computers are needed in the school year time table. It would be desirable to include more teaching spaces and redefine school curricula dedicated to special needs which can guide them in their personal and professional decisions. The change involves the use of technologies as tools in the teaching of academic subjects - music or mathematics for example - rather than the teaching of the ICT's as a separate subject.
To summarise: Development of equipment, development of digital content, further training of teachers.
Initial teacher training should include more wide-ranging aims than simply knowing what and how to teach and a better understanding of the relationships between schools and society, including the world of work.
.Summary of tutor observation - Usage (max 200 words) Some teachers used the tool Lorfolio for their own interest. We thought that students' true motivation must be intrinsic and should be linked to the concept of the acknowledgment of self and others. As such, several teachers agreed that we need to promote "special" experiences that trigger this awareness. The majority of pupils agreed that it is necessary to have greater access to these types of programs. It should exist in vocational schools teaching time dedicated which could be used specifically. Most pupils and trainees could study at least some of their curriculum through the medium of competencies, they use their Portfolio to find (in a first step) summer job and/or work placement. They use data as a starting point to redefine their post-secondary studies. They use also Lorfolio to check their accuracy end fine-tune if needed.
.Summary of tutor observation - Benefits (max 200 words) As pupils progress, their skills where refined and they develop confidence and positive self-image and they pride in their past. They increased their ability to communicate.
They also acquired a greater self-confidence.
They practise their school work more independently.
They recognise unknown competencies, that hat would have been disregarded and/or invisible.
Most of them used the Lorfolio tool to find a summer job.
They improved their cover letters.
Some pupils have shown a growing willingness to select companies.
.Summary of tutor observation - Development of competencies (max 200 words) Self-regulation: by using Lorfolio pupil have to choose right items. The greater number and variety and mix of channels that will become available seem to be opening up the field for more reliance on self-regulation.
• Self-assessment: the pupils have to choice their own competencies in a proposed list
• Self-management: analytical and summary skills. Face to the proposal they developed new abilities : calm, imaginative, resourceful, Well-organized
• Thinking, problem-solving and decision making : Analysis and summary skills; Popularization; Teamwork skills;
• being creative
• communication (reading and writing)
• collaboration : availability; respect for procedures; Team player; ability to manage conflict; ability to manage work time
• motivation and confidence : advisory role
.Summary of tutor feedback - Supporting transition (max 200 words) We do wait the second part of experience (December) to collect more information
.Summary of tutor observation - Challenges or barriers (max 200 words) Our own skills should be developed. We have to propose a good balance basic education between acquiring knowledge and methodological skills which enable a person to learn alone.
Pupils become accustomed to easy, they find ready information, and strive not to acquire it, they become dependent on the machine.
The high cost of computers and the lack of teacher training discourage the continued use of the computer for instructional purposes; overcrowded class sizes, lack of computers and qualified human resources make it difficult to use teaching this tool.
One of the main obstacles is the verification of the pertinent use of resources.
Only 65% of the teachers had access to a personal computer and 50 % of them use it to teach.
A certain number of them prefer to use books (10%) and only 26 % trust in ICT.
Less than 40 % use ICT to find information
32 % of them consider that school is well equipped for using computer
42 % expect training relevant to their needs and using ICT need more time to prepare lessons
.Summary of tutor observation - Improvements that can be made to the activity or the application (max 200 words) To extend this experience to a wider public teachers involved should receive prior training during their studies. Training modules on the use of ICT and how to express a competence should be part of the teacher training
Introduce ICT in the official curriculum. Developing training scenarios to ensure a rational integration of ICT in learning, using real life simulations to increase the understanding
Develop the ability to rely on others (librarian, teachers in other disciplines, educational assistants), so teamwork and interdisciplinary.
Develop collaborative platforms in vocational school.
We propose also, in a second step to develop collaboration with other institutions by inviting agencies, all interested suppliers or contractors to consider joining the system by submitting indicative tenders.
We do develop teacher training
Reflection and recommendations regarding the activity and approach used by the teacher, tutor or trainer
.What worked well? (max 250 words) The pupils collected and sorted their work, and are now able to review their work experiences, to recognize and project them in order to determine criteria for selecting them.
With help of the online guide they can identify their strengths and weaknesses, explain their challenges, difficulties, progress, success.
They can also cogitate, accept and write personal thoughts.
They can imagine an adapted action plan for the next stage (goal, means, timeline)
.What would be done differently? (max 250 words) Those who do not use ICT are those with refractory attitude to this use, ignorance, lack of training. It means that we can imagine an academic training program.
.Recommendations for other practitioners who may consider using this approach (max 250 words) Support back-to-school activities
Support for teacher- training
Designate a technical coordinator for the project monitoring
